Aditya Birla Nuvo Q1 net up 24% at Rs 331.33 crore

Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd (ABNL) on Friday reported 24.16 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 331.33 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2013, driven by strong performance from all its business verticals .

The company had reported net profit of Rs 266.84 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

Aditya Birla Nuvo's net sales during the quarter under review were at Rs 5,680.14 crore, an increase of 8.11 per cent as against Rs 5,253.58 in the corresponding period last year, the company said in a BSE filing.

"Amidst the challenging macro-economic scenario, ABNL has posted strong earnings growth. The company is competitively well positioned in most of its business," the company said in a statement.

During the quarter, revenue from branded apparels and accessories were at Rs 982.06 crore, an increase of 87.41 per cent while revenue from textiles grew marginally by 2.84 per cent at Rs 312.84 crore.

Revenue from telecom was at Rs 1,651.23 crore, an increase of 18.57 per cent.

Life insurance business segment contributed Rs 895.16 crore to the revenue, a decline of 17.75 per cent while revenue from other financial services increased by over two fold to Rs 474.47 crore.

During the quarter, revenue from IT/ITES grew by 9.17 per cent at Rs 657.55 crore.

Overall expenses in the quarter were at Rs 5,053.23 crore, an increase of 5.95 per cent compared with Rs 4,769.4 crore in the same quarter last year.

Shares of Aditya Birla Nuvo closed at Rs 1,127.15 apiece at the end of yesterday's trade, up 0.80 per cent from the previous day's close on the BSE.

Without making a direct reference to the recent violence in Assam with different ethnic communities demanding separate states on the lines of Telangana, he pointed out that violence cannot solve problems and only through discussions and talks can things be sorted out.
"From the Assam government side we are holding talks with every body -- ULFA, NDFB, Dima Hasao Daogah and other militant groups. So even with separate state demanding parties for Kamtapur, Karbi Anglong, Bodoland, etc, we are doing the same for we need development, unity and peace under one umbrella -- Assamese," Mr. Gogoi said.

Finance Ministry working on additional steps to contain rupee fall

Worried over the widening current account deficit (CAD) and the sliding rupee, Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday held a series of meetings with top officials to firm up additional steps to support the currency.

The measures could include further relaxation of external commercial borrowing (ECB) norms for state-owned companies, curbs on import of non-essential goods and encouragement to exports, sources said.

Mr Chidambaram also held deliberations with Commerce Secretary S R Rao.

The Ministry, according to sources, is likely to announce additional steps soon to contain CAD and check volatility in the forex market.

Mr Chidambaram had earlier said the government would be looking at "some compression in non-oil and non-gold imports, especially of non-essential goods." He had specifically cited the examples of coal and electronic hardware and said that the officials would be working out a list of imported items that could be compressed.

The Minister had also said that blue chip public sector undertakings could be encouraged to raise funds from overseas markets. Pursuant to the announcement, heads of several PSUs met Finance Ministry officials, pleading for relaxation of the ECB norms.

The new measures being considered by the Finance Ministry are in addition to steps taken recently by the Reserve Bank to tighten liquidity and curb volatility in the rupee, which touched a life-time intra-day low of 61.80 to the dollar on August 6.

The RBI yesterday announced it would auction Rs 22,000 crore of bonds every Monday to suck out liquidity and check speculation in the forex market.

Earlier, the central bank had raised the Marginal Standing Facility rate to make borrowing from the RBI expensive for banks. The RBI and the government have also taken steps to curtail imports of gold.

The current account deficit, which occurs when the total imports of goods, services and transfers exceed exports, had hit a record high of 4.8 per cent of GDP in fiscal 2012-13 as rising purchases of oil and gold from overseas widened the trade gap.

A widening CAD also weighs heavily on the local currency.

IAS suspension - Govt. mulls amending rules

In the backdrop of controversial suspension of Durga Sakthi Nagpal, the Centre is considering amending rules to ensure an IAS officer is not suspended or transferred due to vested interest.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) -- which acts as nodal body for administrative matters related to Indian Administrative Service (IAS) -- may revisit rules that outlines procedure for disciplinary action against an officer of the service.

“We are considering to make changes the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969 to ensure that an officer of such services is not suspended due to political vendetta or any other vested interest. The move is aimed at ensuring hassle-free working of the officers,” a senior DoPT official said.

He said that no decision has been taken as of now on how to go about it.

If changes in rules are made applicable, they will also have bearing on two other All India Services -- Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFoS) -- besides IAS.

“The Centre will seek opinions from concerned cadre controlling authorities like Ministry of Home Affairs (for IPS) and Ministry of Environment and Forests (for IFoS) before going ahead with the change in rules. The matter is under discussion within DoPT,” the official said.

The move comes in the backdrop of suspension of Nagpal, a 2010 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, who had taken o sand mining mafia active in Gautam Budh Nagar district of the state.

He had recommended provision for serving of a “mandatory show cause notice” to an officer seeking his or her explanation within a specified time period before suspension.

“Only after perusal of that particular IAS officer’s reply to the show cause notice, suspension should be decided,” he had suggested.
